Market research firm, Harris Interactive, conducted the study that illustrated just how skeptical the American public is of what they read on the internet. According to 1,900 Americans surveyed, not only do 98% of them distrust the information they find on the internet, but 94% believed that "bad things can happen as a result of acting on inaccurate information online."

The top reasons people gave for distrusting the information on the internet included:
- 59% - Too many ads
- 56% - Outdated information
- 53% - Information is self-promotional
- 45% - Unfamiliar forums
Also, the "bad things" people were concerned with happening from inaccurate information were:
- 67% - Wasting their time
- 63% - Getting a computer virus
- 51% - Losing money
